Advocacy, Policy & the Future of Dentistry in Washington

Course Description

The decisions being made in Olympia can have a very real impact on how dentists practice, how practices operate, and ultimately how patients receive care.

From insurance and workforce challenges to new regulations and changing practice models, dentistry is facing issues that could shape the profession for years to come. This session will take you behind the scenes of what’s happening at the state level and, more importantly, what WSDA is doing on behalf of Washington dentists.

WSDA President Dr. Brittany Dean will share the issues currently demanding the profession’s attention, recent advocacy wins, and the priorities ahead. Attendees will get a clearer picture of where dentistry is headed in Washington and how organized dentistry is working to protect clinical autonomy, strengthen dental practices, and keep dentists at the center of decisions affecting patient care.

Attendees will learn about:

• The biggest legislative and regulatory issues currently affecting Washington dentists

• Recent advocacy wins and what they mean for dental practices

• Emerging challenges involving insurance, workforce, practice models, and clinical autonomy

• What WSDA is working on next and why it matters to practicing dentists

• How individual dentists and organized dentistry can influence decisions shaping the profession

About the Speaker

Dr. Brittany Dean is President of the Washington State Dental Association and a pediatric dentist. She earned her DDS from the University of Washington, completed a one-year hospital-based residency, and later earned her MS in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Washington.

Her career has included work in community health, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and pediatric dental practice. She also regularly travels to Alaska to provide dental care to children.

Dr. Dean lives in Edmonds with her husband, who is also a dentist, and their Siberian husky, Hardy. Outside of dentistry, she enjoys hiking, backpacking, kayaking, traveling, and never turning down a good adventure.
